The Galilean Log

April 2011

From the Pastor

One of my favorite days of the year is the first day of Spring. It’s not so much the day itself that I like, or even the fact that it means that the  cold winter days are behind us. it’s more about favorable weather ahead. Just the thought of being outdoors in the spring (filling my eyes with it and breathing in the fresh air) gives me a bit more zip and energy.

In fact last week I was able to for a walk in the woods for almost an hour. What a great feeling that was. It felt so good to my body and for that while I felt rich—like I as in paradise. And I realized again that our wealth comes in the things that God gives.

Spring is here now! The robins are already back. The grass is starting to turn green. Soon the famers and gardeners will be busy in their fields/gardens. And I can’t help but marvel at all ~ just like the psalmist who wrote in Psalm 8:

“O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! When I look at the heavens, the works of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have established; what is the human being that you are mindful of us and care for us? Yet you have made us little less than God and have crowned us with glory and honor. You have given us dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under out feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the sea. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!!”

Look around you and enjoy the spring time ~ if you look, you can see God recreating the world around us.

Coming to Galilean April 10! Community Bell Choir

The Joyful Noise Community Ringers of Clear Lake is a handbell ensemble which exists for the purpose of joyfully sharing their love of handbells within, as well outside, our community. We seek excellence in music making and are committed to bringing the message of community to others through ringing joyfully!

The choir was started 4 years ago by Diane Widick and Linda Jacobs who wanted to play handbells in other places besides church. There are currently 10 members in the choir.

Be here!! Sunday, April 10th! They will be ‘ringing out music to our ears’ during our 9:15 am worship service with 2 songs: “Let All Things Now Living”; “On Eagles Wings”.

One of our own Galileans is a handbell ringer with this group, Ruth Topp. We are excited about this event happening and hope you will be too!!! It will definitely prove to be a morning full of music, praise and glory.

Thanks!! The Worship Commission ~ Dan Gapinski, Marilyn Chalgren, Karen Holm

and Accompanists  Brenda Bonnstetter, Linda  Hopper, Sonja Backer &  Jackie Swanson

From the President’s Desk

As I sit and watch March Madness, I think how quickly some people’s lives change. Some of these teams thought they were going to be around playing for a long time. Some change is due to luck, some is due to skill, some is just due to the circumstances. This is just like when the Tsunami came through. I am sure that those people did not wake up in the morning thinking that would be their last day. My hope is that the people that died in Japan were at peace in their lives and ready to meet their maker, as we all should be.

This all just makes me think that we should all live every day to the fullest. My challenge to you is this: Pay It Forward! Do something nice for someone. Let us all help someone in need this month, just because. Be a good Samaritan and live life to the fullest!

Please read Luke 10:25-37.

God Bless!!

            Leanne Hicks

From IFCA

Sandy Christ is the new representative for IFCA from St. Patrick’s Catholic church here in Clear Lake. She & her husband have respected the work that IFCA does to support community action in a cooperative way among the churches.

At the last IFCA meeting, the group heard a presentation from Sally Dusenberg, Student and Family Services Provider from Clear Lake Schools. Sally works on a one-to-one basis as a support for struggling families with young children. Many of these families are in need of assistance in accessing community services. Currently she is setting up an inventory of supplies that can be used as needs arise. Her service to families helps to insure that more children come to school without barriers to learning.

The IFCA representatives contributed $250 to the Fund for Students and Families in Need in Clear Lake schools. The needs are ongoing.

Sally will be at Galilean on Sunday, March 27 to give a Temple Talk on this to the congregation.

A list of needed supplies is posted on the bulletin board in the front entry of the church, as well in the Bulletins as inserts for March 27th.

Clear Lake has an excellent reputation for volunteerism and a spirit of giving. Sandy is pleased to be a part of this caring spirit. For more information and or questions, please call Sally @641-357-5288 or Sandy @ 641-357-5568.

            Thanks!!
