Good Gifts

Christmas is a time for gift giving in honor of the birth of Christ. God has given us the greatest Christmas gift ever by sending God's only son to live among us, be crucified for our sin and rise again to buy for us eternal life. Because God has been so extravagant with God's gifts to us, in this season we give gifts to one another.

Sometimes that gift giving is difficult. Well, maybe not the giving but the choosing of the gift to give. For instance, my mom is 85 years old (or will be this December 28th) and has given us orders not to get her anything she would have to dust or clean around. So, what do I get her? She really doesn't need anything. But I want to give her a gift. It's Christmas and she's my mom. Giving her a gift feels like the right thing to do.

But what gift would truly please her. She doesn't want me to spend a lot of money for a gift. My time and bringing Anna to visit her is probably the gift she would appreciate the most. But I still feel like that is not enough. So, here's what I came up with:

I am going to save the life of a child in honor of my mom and the birth of Jesus. For Christmas I am going to donate money to the ELCA Malaria project in my mom's name. This will purchase mosquito nets, or medications, or help workers get rid of areas where mosquitoes breed. Mom doesn't need another trinket to have to dust, but children in other parts of the world are dying for lack of netting to keep the mosquitoes off them when they sleep at night.

Or, if you'd like to go in a different direction, you can find many gifts that will make a difference in the lives of children and families around the world. Simply go to www.elca.org and click on the OUR FAITH IN ACTION tab at the top of the page; then click on DONATE NOW. This will take you to a page where you will see links. If you click on the SHOP THE ELCA GOOD GIFTS CATALOG you will find many great suggestions for gifts you can give that no one will return. You can even send them an e-card or print out a nice card to tell them about the GOOD GIFT you gave in their honor.

The other advantage to giving through the ELCA is that all of the overhead cost is already paid through our regular Sunday offerings and the Mission Share we send through the Northeastern Iowa Synod. So, for instance, when I give $10 in honor of my mom it will actually buy a $10 mosquito net.

Happy giving ~

From the President’s Desk

Tis the season to be jolly. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to my fellow congregational members!! When my son was young, I tried to teach him the true meaning of Christmas; the day that Jesus was born. I remember as a child going to midnight mass (yes, I was a Catholic growing up!) I still remember when the lights were off and all the candles were lit and the church was so beautiful. This was the night Jesus was born.

Today, it seems as if everything is so commercialized. We have Christmas music playing in all the stores even before Thanksgiving; everyone is wondering what to get whom, and where they are going to spend Christmas? I try to instill the true meaning in my family and in the people I work with. Since I am in charge of the Christmas party at work, we do a gift exchange, dinner, then we also adopt a less fortunate family to buy gifts for, and also bring food for the food bank. I try every year to think of another way to help others. I have seen firsthand families who can’t even afford clothes or outerwear for their children, no less, any toys the children may want.

My hope this Christmas season is that you take a moment out of your life and help someone less fortunate. Buy a gift for Toys for Tots, bring an item for the Kids and Family Services at CLHS, bring an item for the food bank, invite a neighbor over for dinner that you know will be by themselves over the holidays. I know that it is a cliché, but I like it; Keep Christ in Christmas!!

God Bless everyone this Christmas season and all year! Leanne Hicks, President

Evangelism

"This little light of mine, I'm going to let it shine." We all have heard that classic
church song sometime in our lives, but do we really let our light shine? To me,
Evangelism is all about spreading the light of Jesus and sharing the Good News of the
Gospel to people. I love that song and I try to follow the words of it, I pray that God
will give me the courage to do so and I pray that he will give others that power as well.

I know that Evangelism may sound scary or discouraging to try; we worry about
what everyone will think of us, the "technique" on how to go about this, or the thought
of putting in so much effort into something that it won't work anyway. But God isn't
asking us to move mountains, just to move others. We all can make a difference and let
our light shine. Evangelism doesn't have to be big or showy, God isn't calling us to
knock on everyone's doors, it is the simple things that matter that make the biggest
impact on people. Invite someone you know to a Bible study or church, ask them to
talk about their faith and really listen. So many ways to show God's love! So many
people need to know about his love.

I pray that God will give us all the support we need to be servants of sharing the
Gospel. I pray that he will calm all of our fears of the concept of Evangelism; I pray that
everyone can be the light for Jesus Christ. Let it Shine, Let it Shine, Let it Shine.

Your Sister in Christ-Kelli Gapinski

Know your Galilean: The Mutual Ministry Team

The Mutual Ministry Team is a group of 4 people who are mutually appointed by the Church Council and the Pastor. The purpose of the group is to provide support to, act as a sounding board for, and provide feedback to the Pastor. The current team consists of Lorraine Hoffman, Dan Gapinski, Jim Latham and Connie Bieber. The members serve a term of 4 years, with 2 people being replaced every 2 years. The team meets infrequently depending on the Pastor’s preference or if there are issues to discuss.

As mention above, the team provides support to the Pastor both spiritually in prayer for him and his family, as well as his ministry. We also provide confidential conversation on topics that the pastor may be concerned about and/or needs some feedback on.

For the congregation, the team members serve as means of conveying any concerns or issues that a member may have about the ministry or pastor at Galilean. As some folks may not be comfortable conveying their thoughts to the Pastor directly, the team members serve as a “go-between.” In these cases, the group may call a special meeting with the Pastor, or bring concerns up at a meeting that may already be scheduled. Confidentiality for all parties are respected.

Dan Gapinski ~ Mutual Ministry Team Member

From your Worship Commission

The Worship Commission met on Wednesday, November 16 to plan the Advent Services, Sundays & Mid-week. We will be doing the Holden Evening Prayer during our mid-week services. It was also decided that we would like to ask the congregation to donate items to places in need in our community each Sunday during Advent, and donate all offerings at the Mid-week services to ELCA World Hunger. The First Sunday in Advent, Nov. 27 we are asking for donations to go the Trinity House of Hope in Mason City. This is a shelter for the homeless. Personal items will be welcomed ~ toothpaste/toothbrushes/shampoo/shaving lotion/razors/body lotion etc. On Sunday, December 4 items will be given the Crisis Intervention Center in Mason City. This is a home for abused women/children. Items needed are many, here is a few of the needs: Diapers (size 3 and up), socks for women, Gas cards, phone cards, Laundry soap/fabric softener, Batteries (all sizes), bedding, pillows. The entire list will be posted here at the church on Sun. Nov. 27. On Wed. Nov. 30 at our mid-week Advent Service, Casey from the Center will be here giving us a short information talk on what the Crisis Intervention Center does. On Sunday, December 11, we are donating items to the Humane Society. Items needed: newspapers, cotton balls/Q-tips, hand sanitizer, cat/dog toys, paper towels, cat litter (non-clumping), just to name a few of these. The entire list will be posted at the church on Sun. Nov. 27. On Sunday, December 18, we are donating food to the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank. And on Sunday, December 25, we ask that you use your “Christmas Offering” envelope and choose a charity of your choice to give to monetarily. Each Sunday during Advent the items we are donating will be placed by YOU who donate, into and around our Manger at the front of the church, during the Lighting of the Advent Candle/s. We are excited about sharing our gifts with those less fortunate during this Season of Giving!! We hope you will be too and take part! Thanks!!

Don’t forget!! You can begin bringing in your Poinsettias anytime ~ if you would like them in honor of or in memory of loved ones, please let Karen in the church office know and it will be an insert in our Christmas Eve bulletin.

Note! Our Christmas Eve Worship Service will begin at 4:00 pm on Saturday, December 24. And our Christmas Day worship at 9:15 am. Communion will be held at both of these services. Communion will not be held on Sunday, December 18 as originally planned ~ Our Sunday school will be giving their Christmas Program that day. Thanks!
