The Galilean Log January 2012
From the Pastor’s Desk HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2012 Did you hear the one about 2012 being the end of the world? Yep, supposedly the ancient Mayan calendar predicts that December 21, 2012 is Doomsday. The Temple of Kukulcan at Chichen Itza in southern Mexico, near Cancun, is believed to be the physical embodiment of the Mayan calendar. There are 4 staircases each containing 91 stairs (364 steps) plus the top platform equals (365) the number of days in a year. By deciphering the complex Mayan mathematics built into this impressive structure, the last day on the calendar is 12/21/2012. So, how will you spend the year 2012? What are your New Year's Resolutions for this momentous time in history? This reminds me of the quote from Martin Luther, “Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.” Luther challenges us to take seriously what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount when he tells us, “So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today's trouble is enough for today.” An important distinction needs to be mentioned here: worry is not the same as planning. Jesus tells us not to worry, he does not tell us not to set goals. I'll tell you my plan, I plan to dedicate the year 2012 to faithfully serving Jesus Christ as pastor of Galilean Lutheran Church. That's my version of Martin Luther's apple tree. And I do so in full expectation of celebrating Christmas next December. So, again I ask, how will you spend 2012? What is your plan for the coming year? What will be your apple tree this year? One of my goals, as pastor of Galilean, is to work with the council to reestablish our commissions and get them working the way they should. In order to do this we will need you to step up and be willing to give of your time and abilities to serve Christ through your church. I was talking with Jerry Gunnerson the other day and came up with this little poem. Some can do more, Some can do less, When each does their part, All will be blessed.
Doing you part, giving of your time and talents, is one way you can plant your apple tree in 2012. God has blessed us with this amazing and exciting ministry, and together we can serve Christ and make a real difference in the community of Clear Lake, and the lives of our friends and neighbors. P astor Scot
From the President's Desk As another year comes to an end, it is a time to go back and reflect. This year has been filled with ups and downs, just like every year. It has been a challenging year for me as President. When I agreed to being President, we had a pastor and then all of a sudden, we didn’t. Boy, did that teach me a lot about the goings-on here at Galilean! I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and everyone is where they are for a reason. I believe mine was to learn more about the church that I have called my home for the past 22 years! I don’t know about you, but when I do something the same thing continually, I find myself in an “auto-mode”. For instance, driving to work. Sometimes I get to work and don’t even remember driving there. It’s just so automatic! That’s what has been nice about being on church council for the past years. I have learned about many of the different commissions and what it takes to keep Galilean going! We have a lot of great people in the background that help that happen. If you have never been on the church council, I recommend that you do. It is a great experience to help you learn how Galilean runs and what it takes to do that! It is also a great chance to get to know your fellow Galileans! Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your President for the past year and to learn more about Galilean. I look forward to helping with various commissions during the next year! Blessings, Leanne Hicks, President
Thanks to all of you! For the “Special Offerings” during Advent! It was heartwarming to see the packages in and around the manger each Sunday. Also, thanks to those who delivered these gifts to Trinity House of Hope, Women’s Crisis Center, Humane Society & the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank. The Worship Commission
Each year we ask God if the Engage! Winter Outerwear Drive should continue. Is there still a need Lord? If so, we ask Him to provide. This year well over 1,250 articles of warm winter outerwear were given away to people in our community! Another 200 items will be given through the Salvation Army Toys of Tots program in Mason City. It’s difficult to see how many are struggling, but what a blessing it is to see the grateful hearts receiving LOVE. Thank you for sharing His love in this every tangible way. The Engage! Team/Colleen Thompson

An estimate for materials will be gathered and volunteers asked to assist with the project. A stable/manger were constructed with materials that Jeff had on hand with no cost to the church. They also held a bake sale at church to raise funds for gifts for the Angel Tree. The youth shopped for the gifts last week and wrapped them after church for delivery this week. The The Youth are also planning on serving a luncheon on Sunday, January 15 for the Annual Meeting.

Operation Christmas Child Operation Christmas Child was a huge success this year with a total of 55 boxes dropped off at the Mason City center (just 5 short of last year’s record number). But the best part was 14 Galileans journeyed to the distribution center in Mendora Heights, and 13 of them first timers! Thanks so much to CeCe, Jennifer & Jessica Fuller, Marcia Latham, Kelli Gapinski, Sharon Ryg, Leanne Hicks, Shelly & Joey Turner, Jacob Welper, Eric Hahn, Ali Way, and Pastor Scot for joining me in this adventure of giving and serving. We had a great day, everyone worked hard, and all have said they want to return next year. We inspected and packed boxes going to India and Zambia with a goal of 500,000 from this Midwest center. Thanks to everyone who supported this project whether you packed a box, prayed for a child, or gave your time to work. Thanks again to Lou Stealy, Louanne Bonin and Jeff Stealy for your help in setting up at the church. This project wouldn’t have been possible without all of our Galilean family’s support. FYI: We are featured on the front page of the NE Iowa Synod STAR publication which is on the table in the back of the sanctuary. Nice picture, ladies!!I’m ready to do this again next year!! Marilyn Chalgren
Galilean Members Please Take Note: If you read the council minutes in this publication you noticed that on the Agenda for the Annual Meeting, being held Sunday, January 15, is a motion being brought from the council to change the day and time of our evening worship service from Saturday to Thursday @ 6:30 pm. This is a suggestion that was brought by Pastor Scot to the Worship Commission, who approved it and brought it to council. It was decided that the congregation should make this important decision. The goal of the change is two-fold, first to make the service available to more people and second to give Pastor Scot a day with his family. Thanks ~ Worship Commission
The 2012 Budget, the Treasurer’s final report, and the Agenda, for the Annual Meeting by Thursday, January 5, so these can be given out to members before the Annual Meeting on January 15. All other Annual Reports from commissions and other executive committee members will be due into the church office by Monday, January 9. This will allow me the time to complete the Annual Report well ahead of the January 15 Annual Meeting. I would prefer these reports being emailed to the church rather than given in hard copy. It makes it much easier and FASTER, to run the reports right from my computer. Thank you!!Karen Holm
