The Galilean Log
March 2010
From the Pastor
Last
month, I shared that I believe that Galilean is a 1 Corinthians 13 church.
Galilean is a place where Christ's love is made known through word and deed.
Galilean's are a generous people. The theme for Lent this year is “Generous
People.” The scriptures will be about the miracles and generosity of Jesus.
The sermons will be interactive and include stories about Galilean's history and
future. Dan Gapinski wrote a beautiful song for the stewardship commission and
for the congregation that will be used each week during the service called
“That's What Generous People Do”. It is a song about the grace and love of
Jesus Christ, our generous God. As God's people, we are called to respond by
being generous to others and share the great gifts that God has given us. During
Lent, the leadership of the church want to help everyone in the congregation
become intentional about our faith and our relationship with a generous God. The
stewardship commission has been busy with many projects to help us be more
intentional about our faith. As you come into the sanctuary, you will see
something that is new. The meaning and the purpose of this “new” item will
be revealed at a later time. (Don't you just love suspense?) All of this
excitement and planning began when the church leadership began to recognize that
as a congregation, Galilean had begun to lose focus on the mission of the
church. Galilean's mission statement is “Growing in, Living Out, and
Celebrating, the Grace and Love of Christ Jesus. The mission statement is easy
to remember as it uses the same three letters as the initials of the church-
G.L.C. After a lengthy discussion, it was decided that we did not need to write
a new mission statement, we simply needed to identify ways in which we are
fulfilling and can fulfill the mission Galilean has claimed.
At
our annual meeting, the congregation planned the ministries that Galilean
believes God has called us to do in 2010. A budget was approved, and we were on
our way to begin a new year. Everyone was excited about the new year. However,
there was a problem. The ministry that was planned needed to be financed by the
congregation, and our weekly offerings were falling far short of the funds
needed to accomplish the ministry we felt called to do. In fact, the offerings
were not even covering the expenses of our mission building (the church). Our
treasurer was forced to increase our operating loan (line of credit), and pay
only the necessary items. That meant that we fell behind on our giving to the
larger mission of the church. Our benevolence was unpaid in February due to a
lack of funds. It looked like the mission goals of Galilean might have to be
changed and perhaps even compromised. But then something amazing happened. The
stewardship commission became intentional about Galilean's need to grow in our
giving. After all, “Growing in” is a part of our mission statement. A letter
was sent out to members informing them of the financial needs of the church,
inviting everyone to reclaim the mission of Galilean and boldly share whatever
financial support Galileans felt called to give. The stewardship commission
focused on the the mission of the church, and great things are beginning to
happen. Weekly offerings to the church have increased.
Galilean's are a generous people who have responded and will continue to
respond by supporting the mission of the church. For a short time, Galilean
members allowed the financial crisis of our nation and our community to distract
us from our mission. Fear has a way of doing that. Fear can paralyze the church
if we do not focus on the life giving words of Jesus, who calls out to the
disciples after the resurrection to new life in Matthew 28:10- “Fear not!”
Then he commands them to go to Galilee where they will find him. 1 John 4:18
says, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because
fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in
love.”
Fear
cannot successfully drive the church because perfect love casts out all fears.
Churches that are driven by fear and not the mission of Jesus Christ will
falter. The perfect love of our generous LORD will keep our hearts and minds on
Christ Jesus and the mission of His church to “Go and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I
am with you always, to the very end of the age." That is the mission we are
called to respond to as the children of God as we continue growing in, living
out, and celebrating the love of Christ Jesus. Have a blessed and Christ
centered Lenten Season.
Pastor
Jeff
In getting ready for my trip to Mesa, AZ., I almost forgot about my responsibility to keep the congregation informed by publishing my monthly LOG article. I will be leaving tomorrow, February 17 for one week. Tonight will be the first official council meeting of this year and in looking over the Agenda items, I think it will be a very interesting meeting. You will get some idea of what went on in
this
month’s LOG and I will be able to update you in next month’s LOG.
The
church council enjoyed a Retreat on Thursday, February 4th at the Resource
Center. I was more than impressed by the enthusiasm and willingness shown to
tackle this year’s issues and problems.
I look forward to working with them, and all of you this year.

The
monthly council
meeting was postponed from Feb 9th
to the 16th
due to weather cancellation.
Janeil
Olson, Bob Johnson, Sally Litterer, Marilyn Chalgren, Cecelia Fuller, Amy
Pralle, Jeff Stealy, Sue Brandt, Vicki Whelan, Dana Sorensen, Wayne Pralle,
Kelsey Litterer and Pastor Jeff Ungs were present. Leanne Hicks (V.P.) Jo
Ann Shallberg (secretary) and Susan Starrett (congregational life) were
absent.
The
meeting was
called to order by President Bob Johnson. Pastor Jeff led devotions with the
theme, “Spiritual sit ups.” He invited council members to read Christian
devotions daily and shared a website with a bible study that follows the
lectionary readings. It is http://www.elca.org/Growing-In-Faith/Discipleship/Christian-Education/Daily-Discipleship/Year-C-Quarter-2.aspx
A
motion was
made (Jeff S) and seconded (Sally) to accept the minutes of the January
meeting. Motion passed. Discussion was held regarding new procedure for
council committee reports. In order that the business of the church council
might be more transparent and available to any member, all commission
reports are now being filed monthly in the church office. Anyone who wishes
to learn more about the actions of any commission may make a request to the
parish administrator. The files will not leave the office, but copies may be
made.
Sally Litterer gave the Treasurers Report. Galilean now has increased our operating loan to $6,000 due to low income in January. Although there was $9,370. in income, over $4,000 in outstanding bills plus Synod benevolence remained. However; after the stewardship commission sent out a letter to the congregation informing everyone of our financial situation, February giving has increased and bills are being paid as funding is available. Sally
thanked
everyone for helping the church through these difficult financial times.
Motion (Marilyn) to accept treasurers report was seconded (Dana) and
approved.
Pastor
Jeff gave
his report. Pastor recorded duties for month of January and presented them
to the council for record. Presided at funeral home for funeral of
non-member Eunice Ashland. There were no actions that required council vote.
No
report was given for Congregational Life.
Amy
reported that the Evangelism commission has
not had much response to the grocery delivery program for shut ins. Elijah
Ungs informed the council that the Labyrinth Sign is complete and will be
set out in the Spring. He also noted that he completed a billboard that
serves as an information center and a place for donations. They are attached
to the storage garage. He thanked the council for their support of his Eagle
project, and suggested that Galilean have an “Open house” to show off
the Labyrinth to the community in the Spring.
Learning
commission report
given by Sue and Vicki. Kelli Ungs is teaching pre-school and Kindergarten.
Vicki and Sue are teaching grades 1-6. The Spark bible curriculum has worked
very well. February's theme was love. Plans are being made for Vacation
Bible School with EWALU staff coming and leading another day camp.
Fundraisers for VBS were discussed.
Property commission report given by Jeff. There are many items Jeff listed as “wants and wishes” for the property. The sound system now includes an updated wireless microphone. This was purchased with memorial funds. To complete the system and update it so the back classrooms have speakers and additional jacks are available for the PA system, the cost would be $15,000. A less expensive system ($5,700. bid) is available that would
allow
us to piece mill but Jeff will check with the worship commission and others
to coordinate this project to determine what is truly needed. Once again,
possible fundraisers were discussed to help pay for some of the much needed
projects.
Stewardship
commission report
was given by Marilyn. A letter was sent to every member of Galilean
informing them of the current financial shortfall. The stewardship
commission and the council will work to keep stewardship as a priority for
the congregation. There are currently four teams and three substitutes for
counting the weekly offerings. The theme during Lent is “Generous
people”. Dan Gapinski wrote a song for the congregation and will sing it
each Wed. night. The goal for stewardship commission is to reach an average
weekly income of $3,000.
No
report from Social Concerns commission.
Worship
commission reported
that accompanists are set up for the next two months. Janeil Olson will be
assisting with the Seder Meal this year. It was also reported that communion
cloths have continued to disappear. If anyone has one of these, please
return them to the church. Announcements have been moved to the end of the
worship service.
Youth
commission (Dana
and Wayne) reported that the youth will serve the annual Easter breakfast
immediately following Sunrise service. Youth meetings will now be after
church to keep attendance up. Youth sold 180 butterbraids and funds will go
to defray costs of LYO convention in Dubuque March 13-14. Youth are planning
a ski trip Sunday Feb. 21st.
The 2012 Churchwide youth gathering will be in New Orleans again.
Kelsey
reported as Young adult at large that
she is working on ideas to recruit new members and keep youth active.
Meeting
adjourned with Lord's prayer.

We
sold 175 Butterbraids - our goal was 250. Thanks to everyone who
collected orders. Top 3 sellers were the Ungs family with 43, Welper’s
with 26 and Fuller’s with 24. Great
Job!
LYO Assembly for high school - March 13-14 - there are 4 boy & 4 girls & Wayne & Dana going to Dubuque - contact Dana ASAP if you are interested in coming with us - it will be a blast. Registration for the event & hotel will be sent this week. Youth will be serving Lenten Soup supper on March 10 - please sign up to bring soup, muffins or milk at the
church.
Easter Breakfast - youth will serve pancakes & sausages & fruit for
Easter breakfast - April 4 - This is a free will donation event for the youth.
It was decided to go back to having short business meetings after
church so
more youth & parents will be able to attend. Last night's meeting
had 10 youth and 3 adults. We will have a short meeting after
church to organize Easter breakfast on March 21 (many will be at LYO on March
14). Bible discussions & fun activities will be planned on a
different night during the month - having it on the same night helps youth
with jobs plan their schedules. It was discussed to have youth plan the
lessons & activities for these nights - great idea.
